A totally random look at the world --- thoughts, observations, musings, anecdotes, epiphanies and just some snarky comments here and there. All told by a husband and father, former journalist and pr dude, and photography hobbyist, living in Upstate South Carolina, who just happens to enjoy putting words to pen. (Well, words to keyboard anyway)

We Can Wait Another 14 Years
Get loose everybody cause were gonna do our thing
cause you know it aint over till the fat lady sings
Unfortunately while we were all biding our time with the sucky-ass wasteland of alternative music, boy bands, Britney and Christina, or trashy sexed up hip-hop, they must have been planning this all along. *Barf*
Don't cross our path cause youre gonna get stomped.
We aint gonna give anybody any slack
and if you try to keep us down were gonna come right back
All we can do know is pray that it isn't true... But according to People magazine, it is.
The New Kids on the Block are back. *Gag* (By the way, the lyrics above are from Hanging Tough, one of the dorkiest songs ever written)
Sigh. Now I'm really depressed. I was as hopeful as every red-blooded 80s raised male that maybe Lita Ford would make a comeback.
Or maybe Heart would do a new tour for the first time in years.
There's been a lot of 80s bands in recent years that have hit the recording studio and/or tour roads again. Many never stopped. Some of the best are still going strong. Bon Jovi has been at it for almost 25 years now. Def Leppard - going on 30+. Aerosmith - 35ish.
Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon. Slaughter, RATT, Cinderella. Duran Duran. The GoGos. I heard recently the Bangles are together again. They are all groups that are awesome to have around still.
I want Lita Ford to tour again.
But not the New Kids. I had to deal with them at a rainy concert at Carowinds amusement park when I was in 9th grade just so I could see Tiffany. Yes, I admit it. I saw them. Not one of my favorite memories. At least not until Tiffany came out.
Dealing with Donnie Wahlberg's horrendous acting has been bad enough. Mark Wahlberg's isn't too bad. The movie Rock Star, while kinda corny, was decent. The best thing about that movie was Mike Matijevic's awesome voice that Wahlberg lip-synced to. (If you don't know who I'm talking about, he's the lead singer of Steelheart)
I just hope that time will have allowed the New Kids to put together songs that aren't as dorky as what they originally did.
I would rather listen to Hannah Montana or Gregorian monk chants every day for the rest of my life than have to hear NKOTB on the radio again.
As it is they'll really need to rename themselves Thirtysomethings On The Block. They couldn't give us another 14 years as a warning to prepare? Then they could be the Rising Seniors On The Block.

The "S" Word
The dreaded "S' word. Snow.
I grew up in a part of the country where snow really isn't that big of a deal. In Western Pennsylvania it snows quite frequently during the winter. It's not an every day occurance, but it does happen several times a winter and, when it does, it can be several inches at a time. So people are used to it. And kids go to school while it is fresh on the ground.
Snow is an awesome thing under the right circumstances. And it's magical when you're a child.
I clearly remember many times in elementary school when there was snow on the ground and we were at school. One year, we had a snow sculpting contest in lieu of several hours of class. Some friends and I piled snow together and carved out a sports car. We lost.
There was a rather large hill overlooking the neighbrohood where I lived in Pennsylvania. After a good snowfall, you could often find my friends and I barreling through trees on our sleds and racing down the hill. We would build snow forts in our front yards and throw snowball across the street at each other.
Okay, so that's my memory lane trip for the day.
Now as an adult, I still find snow pretty awesome. We were watching some neighbors' kids this morning taking advantage of the snow day to build a snowman and have some snowball fights. We even took our cats outside and let them walk around in the snow. They didn't like that too much and went right back inside.
But as much as I love snow, it's a pain in the ass -- well, it's a pain in the ass when it snows in the south.
If you have never been down south when there is a prediction of snow, you wouldn't believe this. You may have heard stories. If you're a transplanted Yankee you most certainly were amazed at this when you first saw it happen. And if you're a typical southerner, you may be guilty of this --- but when there is a even a prediction of snow around here, the first thing people do is go raid the groceries stores and buy all the milk and bread and all the schools are immediately cancelled for the next day.
I went to our local Bloom grocery store about 8 pm to pick up some odds and end last night -- not emergency rations by any means. But I laughed when I saw there were only three gallons of milk left -- all skm -- and four loaves of bread.
Seriously, people -- do you really think that you're going to be stuck at home for days on end just because of a inch of two of snow, even if it does fall? Come on. The average family of three or four can consume a gallon of milk within 3 days. That same average family can probably go through a loaf of bread in 3-4 days. If you're at home that long during the snow, it's more than likely because you're too scared to go out.
Granted since this area does not get snow or ice that often, it's not as experienced in preparing the roads, clearing the roads, or driving on them. But the crews around here do a pretty darn good job. Even with 2-3 inches on the ground, most of the roads around here have been drivable all day long.
The drivers on the other hand are a little crazy. Most people around here are scared of driving on snow or ice and tend to stay home, which is good because if you don't know how to drive on it, you shouldn't. But there are some that don't even know how to drive when the roads are dry that go out and make things dangerous for everyone else by driving on the snow/ice.
Either leave the driving on ice and snow to the people that know how to do it correctly, or take some time when it does snow/ice to go somewhere where you can practice driving on it. Do that as much as you can. That way you can build up that skill for the next time this happens.
Still, snow around here is pretty cool. It got me out of work today. Although I had the standard 5:30 am call to tell me to let the news media know our college was going to be closed today. So in the predawn hours I was on the phone and on the internet updating our website to reflect that, and letting out local TV stations know. Fun way to start off the morning, but at least I got to sleep in afterwards.

Good Riddance to 2007
2007 sucked - big time.
I can't really thing of anything that will cause me to look back fondly at that shitty year, other than:
- We did have some friends that had children in 2007. Obviously, that is a true blessing and we're incredibly happy for them.
- My parents did move down from the frozen tundra of Indiana to now just be 1 1/2 hours up the road in Charlotte.
- My sister found out she was pregnant. They're expecting in February.
- I made some new friends at work.
- My wife and I celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary.
- Neither of our cars had to have any major work done on them. In past years, we've always managed to have something go seriously wrong with one of our cars.
Still, 2007 pretty much sucked. To top it off, it ended on a heartbreaking, totally shitty note with Clemson losing in overtime, nonetheless, to Auburn at the Peach Bowl. Damn.
I do find myself actually wanting to make some resolutions and stick to them this year. I hearby resolve to:
- Lose 25 pounds this year, start exercising, and stop eating so much junk.
- Spend less time watching TV and more time with my wife
- Make better financial descisions and not be so wasteful by buying crap that we don't need or big meals that we can't afford
- Actually use my vacation time to take my wife on a real vacation
- Start putting together a down payment on a house
So here's to 2008. It can't be any worse than 2007, but let's hope it's a lot better.
